During National Volunteer Week, we’re taking a moment to celebrate the people who help make Gold Coast Open House happen—our incredible volunteers. Whether it’s welcoming visitors, sharing local stories, or helping people discover the hidden gems of the city, volunteers are the heart of our annual event. Their time, energy, and passion help turn spaces into stories and moments into memories.
What motivates our volunteers?
“I’m passionate about architecture, design, and the built environment,” shared one volunteer. “I’ve volunteered before and I loved it!” said another, while others spoke of their interest in contributing to the local community or building skills for future careers.
Some volunteers are students or emerging professionals seeking experience. Others are long-time locals curious to explore more of their city. One summed it up: “I’m curious and want to try something new.”
What does a day of volunteering look like?
Every volunteer’s experience is a little different, but what they have in common is a sense of discovery and connection.
“Experiencing a new building, house, area or park—including the design explanation behind it,” said one. Another shared the joy of “discovering the history of the Coast and sharing my newfound knowledge with visitors.”
It’s not just about architecture—it’s about people. “Meeting new people and expanding my knowledge” was a theme that came up again and again. Many volunteers speak of their appreciation for the conversations, the camaraderie, and the opportunity to learn in unexpected ways.
From iconic cultural hubs to natural landmarks, every site has something special to offer—and for some, these experiences leave a lasting impact.
“HOTA (Home of the Arts) is an amazing building with so many details—I love it,” said one volunteer. Another added, “After discovering HOTA through a session with GCOH, I decided to volunteer at the gallery, which I really enjoy.”
Other favourite places include getting to visit private houses (the 2024 program included Tugun Hill House, Tallowwood Cabin, Cal Somni, and Dolphin Court House), and discovering places of historical significance including Ceramic House, the Gold Coast Hinterland Heritage Museum and Southport Town Hall.
Meet the people behind the lanyards
Our volunteers are wonderfully diverse—students, retirees, professionals, history buffs, design lovers, and community connectors.
One volunteer shared:
“I volunteer and work with Ipswich City Council in heritage. I have a strong interest in local and family history.”
Another told us:
“I’m an international student—this is my first year attending GCOH, and next year I plan to volunteer even more. I love learning about local history.”
From a retired landscape architect to a 12-year veteran of major volunteer events like the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and Brisbane Open House, each story adds richness to the GCOH experience.
Their collective energy, warmth, and knowledge are what make Gold Coast Open House more than just an event—it’s a shared celebration of place, people, and purpose.
