Telstra 5G Innovation Centre

Learn about Australia's journey towards 5G at Telstra’s new 5G Innovation Centre at the Telstra Southport Exchange.

The 5G Innovation Centre is the centrepiece of Telstra’s $60 million Gold Coast investment and infrastructure upgrade to ensure Australia is one of the first countries in the world to get 5G.

5G will change a world of people connected to each other and the internet by introducing ultra-fast mobile speeds, unleashing new opportunities for smart cities and homes, drones and driverless cars and augmented reality for work and entertainment.

Telstra has conducted Australian and world first trials from the Southport Exchange and has more in the pipeline. The site has been associated with communication for more than a century. It was home to the Gold Coast’s first post and telegraph office from 1909.

The two-storey building which stands there now was built in the late 1960s and was once run by the Postmaster General’s department.
