The Mermaid Beach Residence architecturally explores the human desire and emotional comfort of permanence. The primal setting of harsh winds, piercing sunlight and highly visual public beachside interface, meant the response needed to be protective but also perform as an open sun-drenched family home directly connected to the beach. The result are robust forms of site-poured concrete, interspersed with a series of courtyards creating a protective and functional family home for the client.

The interiors focus on the use of primary materials. The combination of smooth and hand-scrabbled concrete is contrasted with the use of highly detailed, furniture-like timber joinery and unique vein qualities of natural stone to provide relief and balance against the primal qualities of the concrete, which continually reinforces the protective robust of the building.

This project explores how its solidity and rawness of construction can provide a protective, private environment to nurture the clients.
