Where mid-century heritage meets modern creativity

The Pink Hotel Coolangatta is s a living piece of Gold Coast history, lovingly reimagined for a new era. Originally built in the 1950s as the Ocean View Motel, this cherished landmark is a standout example of mid-century modern architecture.

The building was designed by Scottish-born Brisbane architect George Rae, who also contributed to nearby landmarks like the Capitol Theatre in Coolangatta (1955). With its clean lines, flat roof, open walkways and functional layout, the original motel reflected the optimism and style of post-war Australia — an era when Coolangatta was emerging as a destination for surf, sun and laid-back leisure.

In 2018, the Ocean View Motel was meticulously restored and transformed into what is now The Pink Hotel. The restoration leaned into the building’s architectural heritage, retaining key structural features while layering in vibrant design elements. The result is a playful yet respectful fusion of retro aesthetics and contemporary creativity — one that has become a cultural icon on the southern Gold Coast.

Visitors during Open House will get a rare behind-the-scenes look at this transformation.

  • Explore select guest rooms, each individually styled with bold colours, mural art, and neon signage.
  • Visit the rooftop bar Santeria, offering spectacular views over Greenmount Beach and out to Snapper Rocks.
  • Learn how the original mid-century design was preserved — from the building’s low-rise form to its breezeways and street-facing profile.
  • See custom art and design features, including works by local creatives and pieces inspired by the building’s beachside history.

Every room tells a story. Custom neon signs (like the iconic “You, my first headache”), curated vinyl collections, and Smeg-stocked minibars nod to a bygone era — but with modern comfort. The piano bar, located behind a moody velvet entrance, adds a speakeasy-style surprise, further cementing the hotel’s creative, slightly rebellious character.

From the outside, the building’s pastel pink façade and retro signage make it instantly recognisable. But it’s the story behind the colour — and the care taken to honour the building’s original bones — that makes The Pink Hotel a genuine architectural highlight.

From 3pm - 6pm, visitors can also enjoy a the sunset and a drink over live music at Eddie's Grub House
