Located in Owen Park, the Southport Military Heritage Museum is a testament to the rich military history of the Gold Coast. Housed in a historic building originally constructed in the early 1900s, the museum traces its origins back to Lawson Street in Southport, where the structure served multiple military and community roles over the decades.
The building’s significance began during World War I when it was first utilized for military purposes. Following the war, the hall became a hub for local youth, leased by a Boy Scout Group and later, in 1931, by the Southport Surf Lifesaving Club. However, with the outbreak of World War II, the hall was once again commandeered for military operations, remaining in service until 1988.
After a brief period of vacancy, the Queensland Naval Brigade Southport Volunteer Company took over the hall in 1990, revitalizing its military purpose. In 1995, the hall was relocated from Lawson Street to its current site at Owen Park, where it continues to serve as a valuable resource for military education and remembrance.
Today, the Southport Military Heritage Museum invites visitors to explore exhibits that detail the building’s storied past and broader military heritage of the region. Through artifacts, photographs, and interactive displays, the museum honors the bravery and dedication of those who served, while also offering insight into the building’s multifaceted role in both military and community history.
Open 10am - 2pm on Saturday and Sunday - no bookings required. Please note: this is not an accessible venue.
