2022 PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION WINNERS
The 2022 Gold Coast Open House Photography Competition was sponsored by the Griffith University Cities Research Institute. The competition was focused on two self-guided tours in the new Gold Coast Open House app – the Surfers Paradise Apartment Towers of the 60s and 70s tour, and the Award-winning Contemporary Apartment Buildings tour. Each tour had a $1,000 cash prize on offer.
The winner of the Surfers Paradise Apartment Towers of the 60s and 70s photo competition was Natasha Watson. In awarding Natasha the prize, our judging panel said: ‘Natasha has created a beautiful set of crisp, monochromatic images of the 5 iconic towers of the 60s and 70s period of Gold Coast architecture. In focusing on details of the buildings and using the black and white format, she has captured the essence of the modernist language of these towers in a way that we think the architects of these buildings would be delighted with.’
The winner of the Contemporary Award-Winning Apartment Towers photo competition was Mark Walton. In awarding Mark the prize, our judging panel said: ‘Mark has, in each image, beautifully identified the key architectural theme of each of the buildings which give each its character:
- the use of intricate texture and bold colour at Air
- Ocean Pacific’s modulated and coloured full height panel which calls to mind the ripples of the sea
- the biophilic forms of Norfolk’s curvaceous and undulating balconies
- the soaring vertical lines of Ultra
- and the curved forms of the two towers at Oracle, which address each other in varying ways as one moves around them.’
2021 Photography competition winners
The winner of the 2021 Hidden Gems Heritage Tour Photography Competition was @Quicksquiz. Our panel of five judges felt that each image was carefully considered and beautifully composed, capturing the essence of place with wonderful clarity and a superb eye for the details which make each hidden gem unique and recognisable in our city.
The winner of the 2021 Cultural Coming of Age Tour Photography Competition was Ralph Mayhew Photography. Our panel of five judges noted that Ralph elected to photograph each of the cultural icons at night. The result is five extraordinarily eye-catching images which perfectly capture the growing vibrancy of the Gold Coast cultural scene.
