Southport is where Gold Coast public libraries began when, in 1957, South Coast Town Council extended the town hall to incorporate South Coast Library, opening in 1958. The library was moved to Lawson Street in 1968, Australia Fair Shopping Centre in 1985, then to the current purpose-built library in 2002. Find out more about the history of the libraries on the Gold Coast Stories website.
The current library, which also houses the Local Studies Library, provides a range of flexible spaces for library services, events and meetings. It has a café and outdoor courtyard. As part of Gold Coast Open House, explore how our Local Studies Library collects and preserves the history of the Gold Coast.
For Gold Coast Open House 2024, Local Studies librarians revealed how the library tackles its important role in recording the history, culture, environment and development of the Gold Coast region, through images, documents, maps and other items capturing the life of our city over time.
Visitors had a chance to see the library’s facilities and resources up-close, and take a tour around the tables to see some of the fascinating items held by the library.
Gold Coast Open House proudly acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land on which our events are held, the Kombumerri and Yugambeh Language Group families of the Gold Coast. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging, and recognise their continuing connections to the lands, waters, wildlife and extended communities throughout South East Queensland.
