Capturing the Gold Coast: Architecture Through Creative Lenses

Photography, print, typography and film come together to tell the story of the city’s built environment. Explore the Gold Coast through architecture, typography, film and art. This event showcases projects documenting iconic signage, architectural storytelling through film, and creative practices shaped by design. Together, they reveal how buildings, graphics, people and place contribute to the city’s distinctive identity, heritage and evolving cultural character.

Join us for three x 20 minute presentations with:

Nikolas Strugar

Nikolas is a former architect, a filmmaker and photographer, and the creative director of Ravens At Odds, a production and branding studio for the architecture industry. He works with architects, builders and industry organisations. Architectural training sits at the centre of his approach to content and production, drawing him to the overlap between spatial thinking, storytelling and communication. Between 2020 and 2023, Ravens produced several short films with architects working on the Gold Coast as part of the GCOH digital program, documenting not just the architecture but building an archive of lifestyle and the experience of place.

Andrew Suggit

Andrew is an Australian designer and creative director specialising in brand identity and visual communication, with a background in landscape architecture and urban design. He is the founder and Creative Director of branding studio Henka, working across identity, typography and visual systems for a range of clients. Andrew will be speaking about the Golden Sans typography project.

Richard Scott

Richard is a Gold Coast-based printmaker, illustrator and sculptor, heavily influenced by classical Gold Coast signage and shopfronts. He is currently compiling a self-screen-printed series of local snack bars, motels and massage parlours. Richard won the 2024 “Kids Choice” award at SWELL Sculpture Festival for Barker’s Beach Store, a scaled-down shopfront reimagined as a children’s cubby house, and in 2022 recreated the giant Putt-Putt smiley golf ball on Currumbin Beach. He also facilitates children’s art workshops for organisations including HOTA, SWELL, Mint Art House and Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.
