Bond University, Abedian School of Architecture

Arguably the world’s most bespoke and radical architecture school building, the Abedian School of Architecture (2010-2013) designed by London-based CRAB Studio (Sir Peter Cook and Gavin Robotham) is an embodiment of all things that make an architecture education unique.

Soaring volumes of space are framed by torqued cavernous blades of in-situ concrete, set off by brilliant splashes of colour and the warmth of plywood finishes and custom furnishings. Open plan studios for dedicated 24/7 student use cascade along a central ‘street’ spine, with the building connecting to and contrasting with the sandstone context of the Bond campus.

The Abedian School of Architecture is an accredited, design-driven school offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, using a studio-based model for professional education that graduates students capable of progressing the discipline itself. The building and world-class making facilities support an extremely personalised and innovative approach to architectural education that is unparalleled in Australia.

The Abedian School of Architecture was the 2015 Education Building of the Year at the World Architecture Festival and winner of Public Building of the Year 2014 at the Australian Institute of Architecture awards, Queensland. Hollywood blockbuster San Andreas (2015) featuring Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson has scenes shot at Bond University starring the Abedian School of Architecture Building, and has been featured as part of the Gold Coast Film Festival’s movie locations tour since its inception.

We look forward to opening our doors to the Gold Coast community and encourage you to explore this magnificent building.
