Burleigh Street Residence
The existing bungalow is retained with new pavilions added to the north and south. These pavilions mirror the gabled roof of the existing and are dettached to enable access to natural light and ventilation. This separation facilitates the creation of a series of gardens that internalise the view, reinforce the connection to landscape and provide privacy and security.
The southern pavilion contains the carport and garden room and is setback from the boundary gifting a garden to the street. The garden room acoustically and visually filters the busy road whilst enabling engagement with the public realm. This challenges the typical carport/fence response and reinforces the landscape to the street.
The northern pavilion contains the master bedroom and outdoor room. The existing living and kitchen links both pavilions and is fully operable, reinforcing connection to outdoors, garden and street. Colours, detailing and materials reinforce the historical coastal dwellings of the region.
The house won Gold Coast/Northern Rivers Regional Architecture Awards project of the year and people’s choice winner and an Elina Mottram Award for Alterations and Additions at the Queensland Architecture Awards and was recently shortlisted at the National Architecture Awards.
At the Houses Awards, recognising Australia’s best residential architecture, in Melbourne, it was named best house alteration and addition over 200 square metres and ME, founded in 2013, was named best emerging architecture practice.
